This will be a long review. TL;DR: It's 4.8/5 overall. It's better than its competition in terms of fidelity, and it can get very loud if you connect it to a good motherboard. There will be large categories followed by individual subcategories. This is the format:
Major category: score
Subcategory: score
<details>
So, let's begin!
Build Quality: 4.5/5
Subwoofer: 4.25/5
Made out of plastic and can get dirty easily. However, it has good connectors at the back and its grille is made of very high quality metal, so Klipsch spent money where it mattered. Still, it would have been nice to have more rounded edges like the SoundSticks III (which you shouldn't buy, I'll explain in a minute). P.S. don't forget to apply the rubber feet included in the box to the bottom of the sub, otherwise it will shake on the floor and sound weird.)
Satellites: 4.75/5
The plastic construction here feels much higher quality than I expected for, well, plastic. In addition, it has a metal base, which is great for less vibrations. (For 0 vibration, use the extra rubber feet.) The grilles are well made as well and do not obstruct the sound. I just wish they were magnetically attached (the grilles won't fall off, but they can be pulled off far too easily).
Value: 4.5/5
Klipsch could have used better materials for $150, but they didn't so they could live up to their name. Legendary sound always comes first. You'll see what I mean shortly.
Sound Quality: 4.9/5
Bass: 4.8/5
The bass output of these speakers is just incredible. It's very tight and clean but will definitely shake the floor if you turn the "Subwoofer" knob past half. There are few speakers that can do this, be clean and be loud. That's why I give it such a high rating. I don't give it a 5 because it's not a 200 watt subwoofer like the Z623, so it won't work for a full scale party. But at that point, the house will be shaking, so there's no point in my opinion. For day to day use, this sub gets a solid 5.
Highs: 5/5
Not much to say here. Klipsch is renowned for their horn tweeter's; I would have been surprised if it were any worse. You simply can't beat the highs from this unit. So clean and distortion-free at all volumes.
Mids: 5/5
I'm surprised that this unit performed so well with mids, considering its lack of a dedicated driver. Cleanliness is a theme for Klipsch: no distortion here either. It's actually comparable in quality to the audio I get out of my Pioneer Elite setup (see my other reviews: its a great home theater system), which has a dedicated mids driver. To be fair, the Pioneers are much farther away than these Klipsch ProMedia's are when I'm listening. Regardless, super impressive.
High Volume: 5/5
This thing gets loud. I keep my PC volume at 10% and the ProMedia's amplifier at 50% and the sub still shakes my floor. It only distorts once you push the volume so high that your neighbors can hear. So I give it a 5.
Low Volume: 5/5
I was surprised by the detail this $150 unit maintained at a barely audible 2% PC volume and 30% ProMedia volume. It really didn't lose any detail at all. This is how you can tell it has very high quality components.
Static: 4.6/5
You hear no static when connected via line out from a good computer, but the input on the side of the right speaker gives a lot of static unless you turn down the ProMedia volume to 25%. Considering how loud it gets, however, I don't think this is a deal-breaker at all. 50% PC volume instead of 10% and you'll be golden.
Value: 4.9/5
For the quality of audio, it's so, so cheap. I love it. The SoundSticks III and the Z623 are marginally cheaper for a world of difference in sound quality.
Bonus: 0.2 points
The THX certification is really cool to brag about (and obviously is justified, given this unit's sound quality). It means that the unit passes the sound tests of THX's tests, and considering how massive of a name THX is in the movie industry, this is really impressive.
So, 4.5 + 4.9 + 0.2 is 9.6 out of 10, or 4.8/5. Highly recommend the ProMedia 2.1!
I only set them up last night, and have listened to them maybe an hour, so the jury is still out, but so far, I like them a lot. Sound is really subjective, especially when there's a gap between samples, but I think they sound better than my old set.
They have a main volume control and a subwoofer control. I haven't played much with the Subwoofer control, but as I understand it, you want to turn it up until you just start to hear the bass, then turn it down a notch. Unfortunately, there's no power switch that I could find, so as long as it's powered, the light will be on. Sort of like Motel 6.
The subwoofer has a tuned port, with the speaker facing the other side. I put the plastic feet on the satellites and subwoofer today and noticed I had placed the subwoofer's speaker toward my PC case. I turned it to face away from the wall.
It uses a 1/4 -20 machine screw to hold the feet to the satellite speakers. Eyeballing the placement, it looks like the screw hole is about 1-3/4" from the back of the speaker. You'll need to measure that for the exact dimensions before you order wall mounts. There's enough room on my computer desk for the speakers to fit between the monitor and printer on one side, and the external HDD and wire basket on the other. When I get my 38" monitor, I'll need to get wall mounts.
The speaker control box is independent of the right speaker but slides into a mounting slot when it's on the desk. It will come out to be closer to the monitor if the speakers are wall mounted. The attached cables and wires are plenty long enough to wall mount relatively far from the monitor.
I don't like all the wires hanging loose, so the next thing to do is undress my under-desk cable bundle so I can pull the old speaker system out and dress these new wires and cables into it. After that, I'll clean up the cable mess on my desk, and maybe get rid of a USB 2.1 hub, and just use my USB 3.1 hub, to free up some room.
Oct 5, 2022. I never believed in "burn-in" that the audiophile snobs always talk about, but maybe these speakers are burning in, as they seem to sound better than ever. I dressed the wires to make the back of my desk neater, but I'm close to ordering a 38" monitor and will have to raise the speakers and move them horizontally, so I'll have to unbundle the wires before I start, and re-bundle them after.
Overall, these are the best computer speakers I've ever had. Each satellite speaker weighs 2.1 lbs. That will determine what speaker wall mount brackets I get.
When I wanted a speaker system for the gaming system I built, I saw Klipsch 2.1 was on sale and got it immediately.
What a joy it has been listening to just mundane things, which I used to enjoyed on 5.1 home theater or 5.1 soundbars. The music or the dialogues or a games background music is so immersive and clear, sometimes i had to pause to make sure if it was not actually real sound.
It even made music.google.com enjoyable - and what a joy to listen to 16-bit or 24-bit audio/music. It is more enjoyable than my Sennheiser Momentum3 or Sony M3 or 1more quad driver headsets.
I love these speakers and would recommend it to anyone who wants to upgrade their desktop spakers.
Top reviews from other countries
My single complaint is the lack of a power button. The White LED is always on and the only recourse besides putting it on it's own switch on your desk is to turn the volume to the minimum all the time.
