I had a navigator remote (almost identical shape and design) for many years. I always had to remove the batteries when I travelled so they wouldn't run down. When my navigator broke I bought this. It is wonderful. Much cheaper than a navigator and basically the same operation as my old navigator but with critical differences:
> small USB dongle fits INTO the remote when not in use. BY inserting in the remote it kills the batteries so you NEVER have to remove the batteries. To remove dongle from remote just press on it and it pops out. then you insert it into the laptop. Windows 7 home premium 64 bit recognized it immediately but I suspect it would work with any windows version (old or new). I used to have to carry a bag for the remote, the dongle, and the two batteries. Now I just carry the remote since the other parts are inside of it.
>USB dongle is half the length of the navigator version with makes it easier to use when space is at a premium
>Buttons are much smaller. Initially I thought this was bad as I was used to very large buttons, but I quickly retrained myself and now I see a big advantage. My navigator broke because the buttons got smashed in my suitcase. I suspect that will not happen with these buttons. Though they are small they are far apart so even someone with weak or frail hands should have no trouble with this.
This model uses a AAA battery, making replacement faster, easier, and far cheaper. But more importantly, this battery lasts a LOT longer than the coin battery of the previous model. I have only had to replace the AAA battery once in two years of regular use!
The RF transmitter is powerful enough to work from 20 or 30 feet away from the computer...though at the longer distances it might take an extra keypress to get a response at times. So I might have shaved off a half-star from this rating if that were possible. Indeed this presenter could use a bit more transmission power, and there is room in the case to move to a 9V battery (if that were needed to achieve it). Of course I don't know if the FCC would allow that!
In any case, it works beautifully with Mac and PC laptops, useable without installing drivers. So it is easy to use and extremely reliable. I really appreciate that the receiver stores into the transmitter between uses so that this small part is not lost, and putting it into the compartment cuts off the battery to extend its life.
This unit fits comfortably in the hand and works really well with PowerPoint (all versions). Other members of our department have the Targus unit and it does NOT work on Mac laptops. The Kensington unit is truly cross-platform compatible! Very nicely done! Inexpensive. Highly recommended.
Buy it. Like, now! I have zero complaints about the functioning, comfort, reliability, efficiency, etc., etc. It's been with me at two different schools (I teach), and a whole bunch of congresses; I have lent it to colleagues and students; I lost track of how many times I've dropped it, but I can count five different places where it has chipped. And it. is. still. going.
I rarely have so many good things to say about a product. This one earned it. Quality and longevity. A unicorn. Hell yeah!
My hang up in doing that had been a lack of a "clicker." Now I have one and it has made a tremendous difference.
This thing fits my hand nicely, is not heavy so you can pack it around the room, easily slips into a pocket when you need both hands to make a point and your hand instantly relocates the correct button for the job. I did find out that the laser pointer does not work on a television screen. That is how we display things in our meeting rooms. That is an issue relating to that not the laser itself. The laser works fine on the wall and other media methods. This will seem like a little thing but it makes a huge difference, the laser points pretty close to where you need it intuitively before you hit the button.
