If You Are Thinking About A Hammock Look No Further!
Been using this for a few seasons....I love it!It is very roomy and it is sturdy. Plenty of room for two. It's held close to 400 pounds.Setup is very easy. The included suspension paracord that is included is wholly inadequate. It is way too short and I don't trust it not to break. I would suggest getting some tree straps or slings at the same time as you order the hammock. I bought Kammok Python straps. They are great, but overpriced, you can find something just as good more reasonably priced with a quick search. The bug mesh is attached to the hammock. If you don't want to use the bug net you can flip the hammock over. The bug mesh zipper covers enough of the length of the hammock to make it really easy to get in and out of. The mesh is top notch and it keeps the bugs out. The bug mesh is a little larger than I would like. It tends to droop overhead. You can jigger with the suspension .... but you will likely want to modify it with ties or a solid ridgeline. When it gets cold you of course need to have a mat underneath you inside the hammock. You may be surprised to know that you are going to want to carry that pad on all but the warmest of excursions. If it gets down to 40 degrees you'd freeze your butt off in a 15 degree bag. It has to do with the cradle of the hammock causing the filler in your sleeping bag to compress. There is a hammocking term to describe this; CBS. It stands for Cold Butt Syndrome. It is a real thing, so you can google it and learn more about how people deal with it. Mattress and underquilt seem to be the two most popular methods.I used this hammock on a night where the temp dipped into the 10s. I slept on a Neo-Air in a 15 degree Marmot Sawtooth bag. I had Columbia Omni heat thermals and fleece from head to toe. I slept fine. I was so warm when I woke up I underestimated how cold it was. LOLThe carabiners it comes with looked a little suspect because they were stiff and screechy, a little bit of use broke them in and I am happy with them. The hammock itself packs down tiny, and the sack that it stuffs into is mesh so it is ok to stuff the hammock in wet. It is sewn to the hammock, and can be used as a pocket when the hammock is pitched. It is much lighter than a tent on it's own, however you will probably want to carry a tarp of some sort, and a better suspension system, so figure that it will probably match the weight of an average 2 man 3 season tent when complete with support gear.It is definitely starting to show some wear after a few seasons, but I already have tree straps and a tarp so the "re"-investment into another hammock is only 60$.....which is a lot cheaper than replacing a tent....and a lot cheaper than replacing some tent poles...I only had a problem finding a place to use the hammock once. I was headed north on the PCT out of Seiad Valley and I was pushing the daylight to make it to a spring a few miles from the road. The spring was at the treeline, but there had been a recent forest fire which left a lot of ash in the area, and it was in the center of a ridge that was switchbacking a hill far to steep to wander about on setting up a hammock. It was dark and I was exhausted so I left the hammock in my backpack and slept on my thermarest on the path.... if you are in the woods below the treeline you'd never have issue...I like sleeping above the snow instead of on top of it. I am not sure that I would ever be so pro hammock that I became anti-tent.... but I hold the Skeeter Beeter in no less esteem than my tent....and I tend to choose it more often when the weather is crummy....
