The crank position sensor is situated behind the exhaust and on top of the bell housing, and the CPS is conveniently accessible with a 30" extension from the top of the engine adjacent to the brake fluid reservoir, going in at an angle towards the bottom of the motor. To remove the holding bolt and to keep the screw from falling during installation, you'll need an E8 socket and masking tape.
Occasionally, a crankshaft position sensor will malfunction, causing the engine to stall and not start again until it cools. You can first experience rough idling and irregular engine misfires. After 80k–150k miles, even if the check engine light doesn't illuminate initially, the CPS should be replaced. To prevent burning, you should replace the CPS while the engine is cold. Swapping the CPS is a very simple maintenance procedure that takes less than ten minutes and will save you from becoming stuck on the road.

I tried to restart, but it only spun over nothing, nothing else. I saw I had my check engine light on. I never had any vehicle stop running quite like that. After about 30 minites I tried it again, and it started up again, and it was running as nice as ever. That really scared me, but I drove home safely.
Now it was time to search online what the problem might be. I got a few good hints here and there, and one of them was for me to get a code scanner. I got me a Blue Driver from Amanzon, and I found 3 codes. One was the crankshaft position sensor. This senser seemed also to be the only one that made the most sense.
So I got one from Amazon, because many people recommended it since it was a German Bosch unit.
It got here within a few days, and last Sunday I installed it. Took about an hour all in all.
It started right up, and the code was gone. Now I am driving around here and there to see if the code stays away.
I kept the Blue Driver plugged in for now. It seems as though my ML320 is a bit more responsive now than what I remember from before. I think I made the right decisions.
