The bigger sizes of the carbide hole saws or any hole saw really, seem to go slow and be very hard on the drill. I'd say after 2" go for the slug buster.
Since they were a recent purchase, I cannot really comment on longevity but, since they cut with such ease, it seems likely the cutting edge will hold up over time.
