Why Play with a Sensory Table?

Sensory Exploration

Sand and water play introduce kids to new textures, temperatures, sights and sounds. Actions like splashing engage multiple senses at once, and encourage children to actively use their senses as they explore. With sand and water, every movement presents an opportunity to see, hear, and to feel something new.

STEM Learning

Early physics concepts like motion and flowing are present in water play. Water toys with slides, spinners, and funnels are a great way to teach kids about cause and effect. Incorporate learning into play by letting kids make predictions about what will happen when water enters a spinner, or a rubber duck is placed on top of a water slide.

Language + Social Skills

Sensory sand and water toys help kids build important social skills like taking turns and experimenting with role play. This kind of play is also great for widening a child’s vocabulary, as they start using words like “splash”, “sand”, and “float”.

Physical + Motor Skills

Sand and water play are a great way to practice physical development. When your child pours water or sand from a bucket, they practice both physical dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Sensory toys like sand and/or water tables also help develop fine motor skills and the pincer grasp as kids practice squirting, stirring and squeezing different accessories while they play.

Play Together!

  • Seaside Storytelling: Get creative with sand and water play! Make up a story about the sea creatures or other toys you’re playing with. Where are they from? What’s their favorite thing to do on the sand or water side? See how silly the stories get as you build off of one another to add more details!
  • Buried Treasure: Hide small toys in the sand and have your child dig them up! Make it harder by adding a time limit to see how many items they dig up before the clock runs out.
  • Sensory Exploration: Instead of sand and water, fill the water table with dried pasta, beans, or rice to create a fun sensory play area to use indoors or out.

I bought this water and sand table from Amazon because it was cheaper online than at any of my local retailers. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. My husband put the table together with a drill and it was easy as pie to assemble. My 16 month old daughter just LOVES this table. I put only water in it, on both sides. I knew I wanted to do that when I purchased it because I did not want mud and was looking for a water table. She plays on both sides equally. It comes with two boats and two gardening pots, but I added beach toys, a mechanical fish, a watering pot and I am going to add measuring cups.I love the umbrella! This is an excellent feature of this product. One reviewer complained that it didn't keep out the sun, but I found it did a great job. Of course, it depends on the time of day. I was able to lower the umbrella so low that my little girl was completely covered the first time she played with it. The second time the sun was at a different angle, but I had put sunscreen on her and the only part of her that was in the sun was her legs. No sunburn at all. This toy can definitely be used for educational play. There are so many water toys out there you can use with the table to teach measurement and basic physics ideas. As several reviewers have noted, the table can leak at the legs. We have found a couple leaks, but they are so slow, there is no reason to worry about them. The leaks are minimal and haven't interfered with the play of the table because there is enough water for the entire time of play.Update: My daughter is now 2 and still enjoying this table. It has held together--this thing is durable! Only the cover has faded a bit, but that's not an issue as the play is inside the table. I still am so glad we purchased this table.
