Product Description
The Hayward PowerFlo LX is a high-performance pump series designed for the rigors of aboveground and on-ground type swimming pools. Combining durable, corrosion-proof construction with advanced features and options, it offers dependable performance and quiet operation. The advanced design reduces required maintenance to simple, common-sense procedures. Made of the high-strength PermaGlass XL material this pump has a clear cover to let you see when basket needs cleaning. An extra-large debris basket (118-cubic-inches) keeps pool maintenance to a minimum by extending time between cleanings. Rigid construction with load extender ribbing ensures free-flowing operation for heavy debris loads. The pump also offers 100-percent drip proof, heat-resistant double-sized seal for long motor life. It features a 1-1/2 inch intake and discharge, and a 6-foot power cord (120-volt). Hayward PowerFlo LX has self-lubricating motor bearings and shaft seals. No lubrication is necessary. The 60-cycle single-phase motor is rated for 1-1/2-horsepower (115-volts) and 20-amp circuit breakers. The pump motor is equipped with automatic thermal overload protection. The thermal overload will shut the motor off under abnormal conditions before damage to motor occurs. The motor will auto-restart when safer heat level is reached. For storage and winterizing your pump is important. Pump and motor must be protected from freezing. Shut off all electric power. Disconnect cord/electrical connections and plumbing connections. Drain thoroughly and clean out any debris. Store pump and motor in a dry, well-ventilated room.

There are complaints about: the terms and conditions of the warrantee which are, nevertheless, clearly stated; the lack of a pump drain plug (there is a filter basket drain plug) which, to me, implies that the purchaser assumed there was a pump drain plug; the seemingly obligatory comment about being made in China; pump failures whose causes are unidentified (like, I got a flat and it's the tire's fault); shipping issues, which have nothing to do with the pump, per se; overheating or inexplicably shutting off (likely due to overheating although one does not say); inability to determine if this above-ground pool can be used for below ground [in-ground] applications; design features not meeting one's demands or expectations; lacking an understanding of the pumps behavior; the pump's failure, out of the box, to comply with specific state electrical codes; failure because one did not determine if the pump was suited to an existing application; the of lack features that one desired or that existed on a previously owned pump; other matters that suggest the user was not familiar with setup and operation procedures.
It should be evident that the user must thoroughly familiarize him or herself with the pump and its intended application. This pump is designed for permanently installed (not, e.g., Intex-type metal frame pools, which are considered by national code as portable, although there are workarounds) above-ground pools with relatively short piping runs and few fittings (elbows, valves, connectors, etc). The pump inlet and outlet fittings are 1-1/2 inch. Long runs, multiple fittings, and smaller piping create pressure within the lines which is transferred to the pump. This is just one cause of pump overheating and failure. Every pool plumbing system has a calculable "maximum plumbing flow rate" which must be taken into consideration when choosing a pump.
Secondly, one must consider the requirements of one's filtration system (element, DE, sand, etc.) and calculate the "maximum filter flow rate." The plumbing flow rate, in conjunction with the filter flow rate, determines the pump sizing - which does not necessarily have to do with pump HP. For a very good discussion and means to calculate one's specific needs, visit POOLPlaza or conduct a search using "pool pump sizing" for many very good hits.
This Hayward pump is rated at 2500 GPH or about 42 GMP given 1-1/2 inch piping. Actually, 42 GPM (variously given at 44 GPM) is the maximum water flow rate through 1-1/2 inch schedule 40 PVC. Note, for example, according to Hayward, there is little difference between the GPM output of the 1 and 1.5 HP pumps, both of which have 1-1/2 inch outlets.) The pump can be wired directly to house wiring (20A, 12-2 with ground) or to a 20A GFI receptacle. Because the motor/wiring is not weather proof, the pump must be housed in some sort of protecting enclosure. To facilitate cleaning, draining, and servicing, connections can be made to the pump using compression unions that are very easily attached and removed. In compliance with local/national codes the pump must be bonded to all pool structures. Because the pump is not self-priming, it must be at a level below the pool water level. As such the pool water will fill/prime the pump, displacing trapped air. If necessary, to ensure that the pump completely fills and is adequately primed, trapped air within the lines/pump may be removed by ensuring that all valves are open and, if necessary, slightly opening the filter cover to let the air out. The pump has an automatic shutoff (thermal overload protector) in case of overheating. Once cooled down, the pump will restart; it will cycle in this fashion until the cause of the overheating is identified and corrected. Although the pump does not have an on/off switch, a GFI receptacle is, in and of itself an on/off receptacle; simply push the "test" button and the power to the receptacle is cut off. Alternatively, one can easily insert and on/off switch between the house wiring and the GFI receptacle. If hardwired to the house wiring, an on/off switch can be placed between the pump and the wiring. In lieu of, or in addition to, an on/off switch, one can install a timer between the pump and the wiring (house or receptacle).
I find this pump to be well made, comparable in design and function to my shallow well pump (made in China and which has provided me years of reliable service), and runs quietly. I readily constructed and enclosed a small concrete slab which houses and protects the pump. I've only had the pump for a few weeks so I am unable to adequately testify to its quality; as I already alluded to, it has the appearance of being well made and, based on a number of reviews from various sources, I expect good service from it.
I regard most of the negative reviews at Amazon as being based on unreasonable expectations, insufficient research, or inadequate understanding of pool pump capacity, function, and application; again, my interpretation. It should be evident that a pool pump is not a simple PNP device: a little research will yield lasting good results.

Installation was trivial, and thanks to the very helpful Hayward support folks I knew just what I needed to do to rotate the outlet a quarter turn. There are 4 very long black screws that come out the back of the motor. Remove those, then rotate the entire pump, reinstall the screws (the threading on the screws is relatively short so that doesn't take long). Then just behind the filter basket is a black plastic clip ring. Remove that, rotate the filter basket, then reattach the clip ring. That was it, not even 5 minutes of work.
I had the previous unit 10 years, and it was exposed to the weather all the time. You do have to be very careful to keep grass clippings away from the motor since they will cause overheating, but otherwise the unit ran. Mine had bad bearings and got almost too hot to touch, so when the starter capacitor went I replaced the whole thing and I was surprised at how quiet this was meant to be. I guess I just got used to the increasing noise over the years. And after 10 years the old plastic was getting brittle, so it was just meant to be replaced.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the unit. It's powerful, quiet, and it fit my system perfectly. And it actually arrived a day ahead of the estimates and was packaged well. Absolutely no complaints so far.

Seul petit bémol elle n’a pas de switch on off on doit débrancher pour l’arrêter
You have to unplug it everytime you need to clean the filter.
Other than that it was priced right and works perfect.
