TL;DR
----------------------------------------------
The Baby Vac is the best aspirator that we've used so far. It is relatively cheap, and connects to any vacuum with a detachable hose. It takes me literally about 1 second per nostril and I remove more mucus than I ever did with the bulb syringe (the best aspirator I had before this). Since I've used this, I clean her nose right before bed, and she is good through the whole night. Before this I had to clean her nose multiple times through the night, and it was a miserable affair for the whole family each time: My daughter crying, I'm battling her knowing that the alternative is that she doesn't eat or breathe well through the night, and my wife either hears her screaming for 10+ minutes or gets engorged because our daughter can't eat due to her stuffed nose. Now we all sleep much better through the night.
It comes with an extra tip, so that you always have one ready, and a pipe cleaner type brush to help scrub the insides in case you forget to rinse well after use.
----- More Details ------
I tested it out on myself to know what I was subjecting my daughter to: The suction is very gentle on even sensitive skin (like the inside of a nose), but strong enough to get the job done very quickly! I will say though, it was a challenge for me to breathe through the suction, so I would not subject an infant to more than a few seconds at a time with this, but you shouldn't need more than that anyway. My nose was pretty clear, or so I thought, but the Baby Vac extracted more than I could with just nose blowing. This may become a family item (though proper sanitation between uses is a must)!
I only have 1 complaint: the included hose is not very long. This forces me to bring the vacuum very close to my daughter, which causes her to jump and get scared the whole time because of the loud noise. Even though the noise startles her, she doesn't fight much because I don't have to stick anything in her nose, and it all happens so fast that she doesn't have much time to react. Thankfully it only takes around 10-15 seconds (including lining up the approach and making sure her head is stable) to get the job done, so it's worth putting her though it instead of the 10+ minutes with all the other devices.
----------------------------------------------
Bulb Syringe
----------------------------------------------
The bulb syringe given to us at the hospital was the best tool we had, but it was dangerous to clean her nose with it lately once she discovered her arms and she has become aware to what the bulb means. We ended up scraping the inside of her nose a few times from her increased vigor. It also took us a while to get everything, but it seemed like she was pretty clear if we had the diligence (turns out the syringe was not getting nearly all of it though). Additionally, we've seen pictures of the bulbs cut open, and it's not pretty (mold and all that).
----------------------------------------------
Battery Powered Aspirator
----------------------------------------------
We tried one from Graco, but the suction wasn't enough to pull much out, and it took a while before anything began to emerge. Overall our daughter hated this thing and it never got as much as the bulb syringe did.
----------------------------------------------
NoseFrida
----------------------------------------------
We really wanted to like this. There were a few problems though:
1) The instructions don't give any measure of how much suction is safe (though admittedly it would be hard to put a qualitative measure to that). As a result we played it safe and never got her nose clear.
2) Health - this was ultimately the reason we threw this thing out. My wife and I both used this on our daughter, and got sick the following day. My wife was using it very vigorously and became much more sick than I, so I feel there is a correlation between the 2 events. Really it comes down to one person inhaling another persons bacteria, and the lungs are an excellent medium for the wrong bacteria to thrive. The nature of this product means that you are almost always using it where there is an increase of nasty bacteria to inhale too. We've just about kicked whatever we got, but it's taken a week and a half so far.
I have read a lot of reviews on these types of products, bit the bullet, made the purchase and am COMPLETELY satisfied ~ this thing is AWESOME!!! My review is not paid for or biased in any manner! Both of my daughters have purchased the Nose Frieda and while it does help ~ I just can’t get past the sucking out the nose. That said ~ I’m completely happy to let the vac do it’s thing!!! A little saline to help loosen up the mucus and the vac and voila! My grandson didn’t fight it as much as he fights the Nose Frieda AND it’s quicker than the Nose Frieda.
CON: My only complaint with this product is that the tubing could be a little longer so that the vacuum cleaner isn’t right there on top of us.
*I would suggest to check your vacuum to make sure of the “strength” or watts and product compatibility ~ I’m certain this would factor into how well it suctions.
Top reviews from other countries
