SELLE ITALIA

The great adventure of Selle Italia began just outside of Milan in the village of Corsico in 1897. Selle Italia was originally founded to make saddles for everyday bicycles used for transportation.

WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION

The Bigolin family took over Selle Italia and began an upward trajectory that propelled Selle Italia to the top with continuous product innovation encompassing new construction techniques and using new materials.

Back then, automobiles were unaffordable for most and the bicycle was the transport of choice for many.

Fast forward to the late 1970′s. The automobile had long replaced the bicycle as a primary mode of transport and cycling was more for sport than anything.

This innovation and vision has made Selle Italia the acknowledged #1 source for high-end bicycle saddles worldwide. Our products are designed to fulfill riders’ needs in the best possible way.

    27 customers mention17 positive10 negative

Customers are mixed about the performance of the vehicle mirror. Some mention that it works well, is easy to install, and is very useful, while others say that the vertical position makes it fairly useless and frustrating.

Nice Concept. Possibly Flawed Execution. Kind Of Cheap Feeling

Nice Concept. Possibly Flawed Execution. Kind Of Cheap Feeling
Firstly, what price can you pay for safety when you're riding? $67 or so for something that will potentially greatly enhance safety when you're out on a busy street? Kind of priceless, right? And for those with drop bar road style bikes, there aren't many great options. There are the type which attach to your helmet. You gotta hold your head still and the viewing area is small. There are the bar end varieties, but they have small viewing areas, tend to be quite distorted in order to squoosh in a lot of rear view, and they tend to be on the distorted side. Furthermore, they require you to really take your eyes off the road in front of you in order to hone in on what you're seeing.Options for flat bar handlebars are much greater. There's a nice Hafny mirror designed to clamp onto the straight handlebar, but road bike handlebars tend to be narrower, and using that Hafny bar places the mirror to close to my body. Perhaps only half the mirror is usable because of the placement.Enter the Salle Italia, designed to fit over the brake/shifter units on drop bars. There's velcro around the bottom open ended ring of the part of the mirror where it attaches. The velcro strap goes around the handlebar/shifter top at that point, and then fastens underneath. It's pretty good at holding. The placement is just right, as you see a larger and less distorted image in the mirror. But in terms of execution and quality of contruction, particularly after seeing a myriad of other products, this Selle Italia mirror seems overpriced. You might have seen "Made In Italy" touted in their promotional materials, on their website. But if you notice in the photo I posted along with this review, you'll see "Made In Taiwan" on the unit itself. Unless Taiwan has become a protectorate of Italy, I would say that this is probably not made in Italy. Designed in Italy? Perhaps. The construction seems very plasticky. Very similar to the Hafny products, which have glass mirrors, that are less than half the price of this Selle Italia. I wouldn't complain too much if it actually did its job. It does in part, but not where it counts most, at least in the unit I received. I'm getting a replacement to see if the flaw is just with my particular sample. The ball bearing pivot, which allows you to customize the adjustment of the mirror on the handlebar is not terrible smooth. It feels like a cheap pivot. The big problem is that it doesn't stay put at some points of the pivot. Instead of feeling perfectly round, it seems like the pivot bearing is oblong, with slight obstructions along the way. What happens is that I reached that point, then I had to apply a bit more force to get it beyond that point, and then pressure inside, feeling almost elastic, slowly propels it past that point. For me, it goes past the spot where I need to have the mirror positioned.I have taken a video so you can see. With the bike itself stopped, I have started the mirror from before the point where I need it to be, and then moved it to that point. You'll see it get to the point, but then drop downward by itself. If I move it beyond that point, past the sort of obstruction, it will stay. But moving it back downward, the mirror will move down beyond where I need it to stop.I may change my review if the replacement is any better. But I'm disappointed with the initial quality. It doesn't seem like a $67 item. BUT...if it works, it will be worth it because I know of no other design that will provide this safe a bicycle rear view mirror for drop down style handlebars. Again, having a mirror above the handlebars means I can take a quick glance and still keep an eye on what's in front of me.Let's hope this company ups its game.FOLLOWUP:I got a second sample of this mirror. It, too, has sort of a slight hump at one point in the pivot bearing, so there is a slight force for the mirror to move back below the point. However, there is a place to tighten the pivot point. It's the place where the top and bottom of the mirror itself attaches, and it's just below the pivot point. Using an allen wrench to tighten there essentially clamps the top and bottom pieces around the pivot. This does reduce the slipping, but it makes it more difficult to re-pivot the mirror to customize it for my ride. And because the whole mirror is held in place on the bars with a velcro strap, it's not all that rock solid a mount. Putting pressure on the mirror itself can also move the velcro strap a bit. Adjustments to the mirror are best done at a stop, and then I'm not at the same angle as when I ride. And all that doesn't stop the mirror from moving downward from its set point when I go over bumps. But it's better. It tends to stay in place longer than the first sample as long as the pivot is tightened down. When the mirror actually stays in place, it provides a great view at a useful and safe viewing angle. The retail on this mirror is now up to just short of $80. You'll be shocked when you get it that it cost that much. It's really just a bunch of plastic, no better built than the $25 mirrors. However in my case, when it works properly, it's the perfect mirror in terms of angle. If I were using a straight road bike, where my body is really horizontal to the road, lower down on the bars, I might be able to use a bar end type of mirror. But with my Salsa Vaya, where I'm more or less around at around a 45 degree angle to the road, I'm semi-upright, and I need a mirror that doesn't require me to take my eyes off the road so much.Another thing, I did try to contact the manufacturer distributor a couple of times a couple of weeks ago and got zero response. So even though the manufacturer supposedly offers a 2-year warranty, I'd be wary of it being honored. And one more time, this seems NOT to be "Made In Italy", as the mirror states "Made In Taiwan". If it were all manufactured in Italy, I could possibly justify the $70-80 cost, as I don't mind paying for well-paid labor.11/9/20 Update:When putting the bike on a rear car rack, I don't trust this mirror to stay affixed to the bike when on the highway. I had taken it off the bike and put in my car. When I returned home, I had brought everything in including the mirror. From about 3' up, I accidentally dropped it on the softwood floor. The mirror cracked in two places. Fortunately, the pieces broke cleanly and I was able to reinsert them back inside the mirror frame. But clearly, there's tension on the glass to the convex shaping of the plastic the glass rests against.I wish there were a good alternative to this mirror, a similar design but better executed, but when working properly, it works pretty well. I still have to adjust the mirror and the interface with the drops on the handlebar from time to time, but it's a better placement for checking out what is behind you than the mirrors based at the endcaps of the drops.
