Two player Co-op is probably the most fun, and this game could be considered a "button masher", but it works like a slightly more advanced arcade game where you need to solve puzzles in order to advance. You are given a certain set of characters for each level, and in using those characters, you must figure out how to advance using each member's specific abilities (Spiderman will need to climb to things and use his web to reach higher areas, Iron Man will need to shoot things down/fly to higher areas/use his laser to meltdown gold objects, Hulk will need to move large objects, battle larger bosses etc.). Example: The first map starts you with Iron Man and The Hulk, so each of those characters has certain tasks that only one or the other can accomplish. In single player mode, you will need to switch between the two, but in multi-player, you and your partner will just need to work together.
There is massive re-playability as I have logged about 20 hours and am at 12% completion. On top of that, once you beat a level, that level becomes an open-world map in which you can play with other super heroes that you previously unlocked. You get to go back and use specific characters on things that you weren't able to accomplish earlier (Example: Needing a strong character like Hulk on a specific map, but not having Hulk at the time you played the level earlier).
This game is complicated enough and really does remind me of puzzle solving. You will need to put out fires, or find secret entrances, or fly to hidden ledges, or hack into computers and solve literal puzzles in order to advance. There have been about 2-3 times so far where I had to consult the internet because I overlooked something and got stuck. It was usually something simple but this game has its challenges.
Most of the time you just fight goons and progress arcade-style, but as you progress and more characters are unlocked, it really is fun choosing from a seriously large character list. A lot of X-men characters, all of the Fantastic 4, Spiderman, Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and tons more (The list is so big that the characters I haven't unlocked scan entire pages). This is offset by the villains too, who number in the 20's as well. You will battle guys like Magneto, but also lesser known guys like "Rhino" and other villains.
This is just a simple, fun game, that you can play with a number of different people.
Honestly, the best part, is that you really can't die, you just have to figure out the puzzle and advance. My girlfriend also played and she was worried that she couldn't keep up, but while I was able to maybe accomplish the harder tasks, she was able to come along and battle goons and accomplish enough on her own that it was enjoyable for both of us (Unlike Little Big Planet for example (PS3) where you really couldn't advance with a weaker player). At the same time, I can drink with my buddies and just game and not get that massive frustration that comes from being owned in a game like COD or Madden. Overall, this is how I would describe this: Less skill based and more puzzle solving.
Bought game, recieved code instantly. Logged into PSN (on my computer, not the Playstation), added code. Went back to living room, game was already downloading. Not sure how people are having trouble with this, but I had no problems (purchased on Black Friday for 39.99 FYI).
Game:
Fricken sweet. Bought it for my 5 year old because I thought Knack was a bit lackluster and had no idea how fun the lego games were. I had to force the kiddo to stop playing and go to bed it was so fun the first day. I ended up staying up and played it with the wife for like 4 more hours. Addictive little game. Lots of content to be had, and lots of pleasure in just destroying stuff with the Hulk, flying around as Iron-Man, or swinging around with "The icky black spider-man venom guy" as my daughter puts it (Venom is her favorite. Fricken awesome lol).
Pros:
*Graphics are pretty good. Runs real smooth even with tons of destruction going on.
*Tons of playable characters.
*Hours of enjoyment. Humor is pretty good (slapstick style.)
*Story, cinematics, and even Deadpool are all clean. By this I mean no curse words, but does not take away from the quality of the writing, humor, and storyline (which is all over the place but thats ok.) I don't mind games having foul language, or even mild violence, but the line of G/PG/PG-13 is sometimes blurry when it comes to anime and video games. There is no worry for me to plop the kiddo in front of this game, walk out of the room, and come back and her repeating something that might be funny, but not funny to repeat to Grandma or her teachers.
Cons:
*Character progression is done via unlocking more characters with upgraded versions (skins with new/different powers.) Wish there was a leveling or RPG type progression to be found, but it might be asking too much for a game that already has so much to choose from (although some characters are just skins of each other, without any kind of signature move.)
*Dynamic split screen can be a pain in the but in some levels that require aiming.
*No way to change controls. Luckily most of the controls are found on the buttons of the face of the controller.
I'm amazed that I've been playing for around 5-6 hours now(last time I checked it was 4 and a half) and I'm probably not even at 10% complete! I know that's for everything, not just the main story, but they really put a lot into this game. I looked up how long it is and it's longer than some big name games like COD. Even just playing the main story. Not including all the extra things you can do. I've only played one other Lego game before, that was Harry Potter years 1-4, and it was the app version. Idk how different the games are from mobile to console versions but this is like 1000x better!! I like the Harry Potter movies but I like the Marvel heroes and whatnot a whole lot more. I deleted that app before I even finished the game LOL.
CONS? More like SMALL annoyances...
If there was one thing I could change about this game is would be to not give hints like every 2 minutes. Or maybe have an option to turn them off. After a while it does get kind of annoying... for some things. Except when it's late at night, you're half asleep and don't have a clue what to do, and then you eventually figure it out. Haha
Summary:
This is just very fun to play. I would say I'm a pretty big gamer. I play games like NBA 2K, used to play COD, and other action type games. This game, at least for me, is one I can just load up, relax and have fun playing. Not have to worry about getting pissed like in other games I play that have a lot of BS in them.
