Good as SPDIF converter, analog out best for casual listening

Good as SPDIF converter, analog out best for casual listening
I wanted an inexpensive USB to SPDIF coaxial converter, for 44.1k 16-bit playback. This MUSE model got good reviews here and seemed to fit the bill.I did compare the sound to my main setup which includes a very high-performing DAC with USB 2.0 asynchronous interface. The rest of the playback chain was a Windows 7 64-bit laptop running jRiver Media Player. The SPDIF output of the MUSE was routed to the coaxial input of my DAC. Both the USB 2.0 direct and the MUSE bit streams were set for dedicated WASAPI mode from jRiver. For sound reference I used the lovely "Roadhouses & Automobiles" by Chris Jones.Amazingly, even though it's "just bits", there was discernible difference in the sound between the two paths. The MUSE converted SPDIF sound seemed slightly constricted as in a narrower or smaller stereo image. On the other side, the native sound of my USB 2.0 DAC was more relaxed and even seemed subtly fuller, deeper (or perhaps more resonant) in frequency reach.Since everything was already set up, I went ahead and checked the sound of the MUSE analog output via its RCA jacks. This was easy since my USB DAC includes RCA analog inputs with all-analog path to the preamp outs. The MUSE sound did come across thinner, even less rhythmic (I would even call it "draggy"), compared to my fine USB 2.0 DAC. That said, the MUSE sound was respectable for a $25 USB-powered adapter.Used as an SPDIF converter for typical internet audio streaming (e.g. 128k bps - my intended use for this unit), the sound will be fine. As I experienced it, I'd probably reserve the analog outputs of the unit for casual or non-critical listening.Construction Notes: The parts and construction of this MUSE really are excellent, much better than you might expect for $25. The case and end caps are all aluminum. The holes for the end cap screws are threaded for machine-type screws, not the usual self-threading type. Since I didn't notice any interior photos within the amazon product entry, I couldn't resist opening up one end to take a look. I ended up taking the PCB photo attached. The product is basically a robust packaging of the PCM2704 LSI chip with support circuitry per datasheet with a couple additions. As a nice noise reduction step, a 1:1 isolation transformer is added to the SPDIF output. There is also a hex inverter chip, which I speculate could be there to buffer/boost the SPDIF output signal.Originally I had to choose between this item and a very similar one on amazon: MUSE USB DAC PCM2704 Sound Card Optical Coaxial Decoder USB to S/PDIF Converter. I preferred the separate RCA jacks and TOSLINK output of this one. The other product does have an internal view posted as part of its product description, and from that it's clear that the other one is a modern re-layout of the same (or very similar) circuit but targeted for surface mount components (instead of the old-style through-hole layout and components of the product I actually purchased).
