Pros:
- I like not having to carry around a key, although it has a keyhole if you forget the passcode or if the battery on the unit goes dead
- I like that there's an easy lock button, so when you exit the house, all you have to do is push the lock button, and it turns the deadbolt to lock (no having to use a key to manually lock from the outside)
- I like that you can program a number of different passcodes, so each person in the household could have his/her own code that is easy to remember
- You can program this to be compatible with another Kwikset SmartKey (so for instance, if you purchase the separate Kwikset knob that comes with its own key, you should be able to program the deadbolt so that it is compatible with the key for the knob, that way you are not having to carry around 2 separate keys; 1 for the deadbolt, and 1 for the knob). We haven't tried or done this yet, but it's a nice feature.
Cons:
- The keypad does not light up, so it can be hard to see the numbers in the evening
- The battery seemed to die quickly; we had to change it within the first month after purchasing. Hopefully this was just a fluke in the first set of batteries we used, because it'll be a pain if we have to uninstall the deadbolt and replace the batteries each month.
- I wish you could program the Kwikset with your existing house key instead of it having to be with a Kwikset key because if you don't change the bottom knob, you will still have to carry around 2 sets of keys (1 for the deadbolt in case the battery dies and 1 for the bottom knob)
Overall I'm happy with the purchase and am satisfied with the convenience it has provided!
Like most products these days, this lock came with instructions in multiple languages. There were two sets, one that had English and two other languages (I didn't pay attention to which two) and another set with three totally different languages. I was, obviously, working from the English set.
And it went fine up through step 4. Then I turned the page, and found that the rest of the instructions weren't printed in English!!
Well, I'm a bright guy...and there were pictures, so I soldiered on! But there's one part where they point to the 'lock' button, and then another arrow points to the deadbolt itself. It seems obvious from the pictures that to test the lock, you're supposed to push the 'lock' button, and the deadbolt is supposed to move out and then back in, to calibrate the lock! But it doesn't. Obviously, there was something in the print that the pictures didn't make obvious.
Well, OK...I went to my computer and found the directions online. I didn't READ them on the PC...I just verified steps 5 and on were in English, and printed them. When I got back downstairs, and went looking for step 5, it wasn't there. Why? because the directions are in a PDF on a page that's legal sized...so my printer printed the top two thirds and cut off the rest! Crap!
So after printing them again, I got back to work. That's when I found out I was supposed to hold the lock button WHILE inserting battery pack, and keep the button depressed while the lock cycled. I guess I'm not so smart...I didn't get that from two simple arrows pointing to the lock button and the deadbolt!
OK...so at this point, the lock is installed. I set my code, and that worked fine as well!
Finally, I was on to re-keying the lock to use my old keys! The tool to re-key the lock, and the accompanying instructions, are packaged individually. These instructions WERE printed in English! They tell you, both in words and with pictures, that you're supposed to turn the key 1/4 turn, insert the little tool, remove your old key, and then insert the new one. What they DON'T tell you is that the tool you insert doesn't go all the way in. It feels like it hits a wall, and just stops. The directions say you might feel a click. There wasn't any click. There was nothing at all that felt like the pin had done anything! But, it apparently HAD done what it was supposed to do, because I finally just decided to take it on faith, and move on. From that point on, it worked exactly as the instructions said it would. So, long story short, just know that the little tumbler tool might not make any noise, and it won't feel like it's actually done anything!
Anyway...I took off a star because the instructions suck! But on the other hand, the lock seems to work pretty well, and by the way, it allowed me to re-key it to match my other locks even though they are NOT kwik-set locks or keys. Apparently, they have to be 'Kwik-set TYPE' keys!
I like that I can add a code of up to 8 digits...cause I'm paranoid! You can add up to 36 codes, I think, though I can't imagine 36 people I'd want to have access to my house. I'm not even sure I'm going to tell my wife...
Caveat. The first lock did not work at installation, I called customer service and they worked through several troubleshooting methods, but nothing fixed the issue. They had me take a picture of the lock in my door, email the picture, and they sent a replacement within a few days. I didn't have to send the broken lock back, or hassle with any inconvenience. Great customer service! I will say the one negative is that it is fairly loud when compared to the schlage, but I still prefer the kwikset because of the key option. Great product!

So at one point I discovered it didn't have to be complicated and went for this electronic lock instead of a smart lock. This is the best little thing that happen to my house this year. It was installed in ten minutes, had a few codes programmed and it just work. Now I never need to worry if I got my key when going out.
I would have gone for a non motorize model but none of them would fit my small bore hole (1.5" instead of the standard 2 1/8"). The motor takes about 2 seconds to unlock the door which some people find unnerving but I don't mind. It's also a bit noisy but I don't mind that either.
I have been using it for one summer month now so I don't know about battery life yet and also if there are issues in the cold winter months. The motor is inside the house though so I doubt there will be any issue.
Long story short I never thought such an inexpensive lock would bring so much joy (but mostly convenience) in my life.
Oh and the wife loves it too!
in -30 celcius (-39 with windchill) the lock still works. I also have the same batteries in there and it's been a year.
Changed me review to 5 stars.
Installation was pretty easy, took around 30-45 minutes. The instructions were easy to follow which helped. It works well but I noticed it is really noisy, like ridiculously noisy. This is our second electronic deadbolt and our other one only makes a small ``tzittttt`` sound. Now, I don't know if this is because there's some friction but before installation I did notice the bolt was a little tough to move. I hope this won't cause premature breakage in the mechanism. There is no friction between the strike plate and the deadbolt, it's installed correctly
Thumbturn is a little difficult to turn, even when door is open which is kind of odd.
The design is very nice and the material is good quality. Spring is almost here so I don't know how it will resist the -30 celcius we have here in the winter. I hope it holds up.
