Customers are mixed about the quality of the vivarium. Some mention that it cleans the water surface well, and is quiet. It removes all the debris from the water, including food, dust, and debris. Customers are mixed about the water flow of the vivarium. Some mention that it keeps the surface of the tank crystal clear, while others say that the water just gets sucked from there, the skimmer cup has to be flooded in order to take in water, and the top cap was too loose.

Best skimmer/175 gal. Shrimp and screw fix!
5 Stars
Best skimmer/175 gal. Shrimp and screw fix!
I use this skimmer on a 175 gallon aquarium, I chose it due to directional output flow ability (most seem to have outflow back into the direction the water is flowing in at which really decreases the gunk they can skim out of your water or it flows out somewhere else you don’t want) and also due to its amazing filtration ability for such a little guy, so very easy to clean too!. I had worried I would not be strong enough for my large tank but it does the job very well!!I tried the Oase Crystal Skim 600 which was close to $60, it was horrible. Difficult to clean, difficult to adjust to water level and keep skimmer function working well and very strong noisy vibration I’m sure the fish didn’t appreciate. It only worked when put at the exact level to skim water but anytime the water level dropped or was refilled it stopped skimming well and was at risk of burnout if my water level dropped just a bit, the floating piece seemed to completely reduce skimming abilities and this is required to adjust to changing water levels. The sun sun version similar to this one only had one directional output that I didn’t prefer blowing down on top of my plants and was only fair at skimming and only if water flow was directly aimed into its collector, other wise most of my surface flow just bypassed it all together.I also tried two HOB filters with skimmers, both failing for various reason but mostly due to inability to skim and filter well simultaneously, they would do one well initially then when it got a bit of debri built up the other would work better or would make odd suction noise I hated. Such a pain accessing as well.I LOVE this filter because it works so well, so easy to clean!, and directional output. Only issue was shrimp kept getting in it as they will with any skimmer. But I found a fix! First I put a net over the top teeth, didn’t stop them, then I put filter sponge in the inlet tube, didn’t stop them. I finally figure out the fix. SEE MY PICS! You need a little bit of coarse sponge in the inlet tube to prevent shrimp entry and a strip in the screw canal as they get I that way when all other ways are blocked. If you take off the screw, which you have to for this to work, you have to mount it differently. I was easily able to go this with a zip tie and two small suction cups I had that had little loops for holding the plastic hooks they came with. It worked great. And no need to worry about the screw rusting now. Just thought I’d share for anyone having the same issues :)Best skimmer I’ve found, just takes tweaking if you have SHRIMP.** update: coarse sponge in filter tube not so great, can affect flow too much. I found wrapping a bit of mesh net 2 layers around the top and securing with a rubber band is absolutely 100% shrimp proof. You can use hair net material or very small holes mesh net. See my last pic. This skimmer is doing an amazing job on my 175 gallon tank, I just placed it somewhat within the water flow direction so it gets good access. I change the pads every 4 days or so to prevent the skimmer from trying to pull water through thick mucked up filter pads. If your pad is too thick it affects how well filter works so adjust as needed.I bought a second just in case my first ever dies, I’m afraid I won’t find another as good after I tried so many already. So just want one more on hand in case this one stops being made. That’s how great it is, lol!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Working for 2 years in my 55 with no issues
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024
This is the sole filter on my 55g planted aquarium (Walstad method - siesta mode). It keeps the water moving and does a good job at surface skimming. Note: I cut filter pads into squares to help remove surface scum, and I flip the pads when dirty - as depicted in the image). I also added a small piece of black styrofoam to help hold the bracket in place and to eliminate vibration noise. I've used similar filters since 2017 and always had good results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great skimmer.
Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2023
Amazing skimmer. Has a well-designed weir and enough power to service a bigger tank (I use it on a 50 gal). You have to replace a factory stainless steel bolt with a nylon one. Skimmers work best if you have ATO unit installed (that way you don't have to regulate the position because of water evaporation). Product name is pretty epic too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well - excellent at removing shed turtle skin on water surface
Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2019
I am using this in a 55 gallon aquarium modified as a turtle tank. I did have to come up with my own way of mounting it to the tank as the standard method of hanging on the side wouldn't work for me due to water level. The 3rd photo demonstrates how I hung it, just used suction cups (very sturdy ones) mounted in the screw holes meant for the hanging clip.

It works very well at skimming off the wee bits of skin the turtle sheds and food debris in the water and has a good sized filter which is easily removed for rinsing. First photo shows the filter and how it has collected a lot of floating crud. It provides great aeration and flow is as advertised. Adding it to the tank has improved the water movement and I don't think there are any 'dead' spots any longer. In all but 1 photo the unit is not plugged in - when not, the skimmer box pops up above water level and when plugged in like the last photo the skimmer box is sucked down and water trickles in along with any floating debris.

My only issue is that the side pipe with all the holes where water exits back into the tank is not attached in a stable manner and easily knocked off or moved about. Probably great with fish where that wouldn't be an issue but a curious turtle, not so much. Still a worthwhile addition for the benefits it provides to water quality! Price is nominal for the improved water quality for a turtle tank too.
