This item is fantastic. This is my first kayak dollie purchase but I appreciate well-crafted items.
This thing is well built, super easy to assemble and lightweight. The wheels are super easy to remove and reattach. It folds down small enough you don’t really need to remove them even if they joint you for a paddle. Tires are beefy and grippy. The kickstand folds up easily and works well.
Get a proper tie down and toss the included strap. It would work but it’s hard to tighten enough for my liking.
Now I’m off on a solo trip. Peace out!
1. Bigger kayaks (like my Malibu Two) benefit from balancing the boat on the cart (attaching it near the center).
2. Bigger boats need a longer tie-down strap. Or, like me, using an anchor line with a trucker's hitch to secure it.
3. The cart drags a bit in soft sand - that said, I have SOFT sand and a heavy boat.
4. The cart works very well over hard packed dirt & gravel.
5. I haven't really figured out why it needs a kickstand - maybe smaller boats / boards will benefit from this.
I had shopped around for a cart like this for a while, and when I saw the price on this I thought that quality might be an issue, but ordered it anyway since the price is so low. It arrived on time, and as other reviews noted, smelled like a whole tire store was jammed in the box. The cart stays in the garage anyway, so that's not a problem. As far as function goes, it does a great job of carrying my Malibu Two kayak (12'6" X 36", and 70lbs with gear). The supplied strap was far too short, so I just use a length of my anchor line with a truckers hitch to secure the 'yak to the cart.
One hint for people not used to using these products - place the cart as close to center as you can, to help manage weight, and attached your strap / line to a tie down on the boat to keep the cart in place when rolling over soft sand. I take mine aboard when paddling in the harbor; just remove the wheels, fold the cart, and use a short length of line to secure to the boat.
If it is tight enough you can push or pull it so it does what its supposed to. I will try a bungee cord to see if that helps me until I have the strength to pull their strap tight enough.
I love that it was inexpensive, lightweight, and the assembly was super easy. I am still a bit confused by the photo of assembly that came with it. It shows two kickstand things but only came with one. Maybe they have other styles but two kickstands could actually be beneficial.
No assembly needed except putting on/off wheels with easy lock pins a 5 year old can handle. Cart is very light and straps easily to outside of kayak for carrying along down river if you want to.
Kayak straps are easy to use if you look on internet for hints, no instructions so if you mess around you might not find the most stable strap down position at first (front wheel bar on one side, to rear wheel bar on the other- I think...).
Does not maneuver well for sharp turns (e.g.tight left and right wiggles into the back of a crowded garage required pick up of one end to re-orient- no big deal), but that is very minor, no problem steering around car and garbage cans in driveway.
Tires reek when first unpacked, the lesson here is unpack outside, and immediately discard box and plastic wrapping that retain the rubber odor. BUT.... the tires air out in a day or two, did not notice any odor in hot closed garage by day 2-3.
Could have build a sort of similar cart from plastic plumbing pipe, joints, joint glue, styrofoam bumpers, and large wheels based on internet plans, for about 35 bucks. Or I could have bought this one for about 31 bucks. A no brainer.
p.s.. opted for product with pneumatic wheels... internet complaints abound for non-inflatable wheels until you go into at least the 85+ dollar carts, which are fine carts if you are transporting over long/rough distances, but overkill for my casual level of use and maybe half-block maximum parking lot distances. I'm not taking my kayak down trails in Alaska, just out to the pickup and then down to the boat ramp after parking. I'm putting in a few miles on a local river 2-3 times a week, but my back complained about lifting and carrying the boat at a weird angle like I used to do 50 years ago, and the cart was/is an excellent solution.
