Not as good as Stihl, some poor design choices, just ok for the average homeowner.
3 Stars
Not as good as Stihl, some poor design choices, just ok for the average homeowner.
UPDATE 7/24/23: another design flaw I've noticed is that the airbox is directly above the gas cap, and I can't get the gas cap off without physically pushing the airbox up and out of the way enough to get the cap off. Very dumb. After a year of use, engine power still seems ok.Original review:I worked in lawncare for several years, and I also did tick and mosquito treatments. I used a Stihl SR-450 during that time, so my review will be comparing the Tomahawk to that. Having left the lawncare business I needed a machine for home use since my property is quite buggy. So I decided to try the Tomahawk since it's half the price of the Stihl, and Tomahawk's website show a similar CFM (542 Stihl, 490 Tom.), Engine Displacement (both ~63cc), and horsepower (3.9 Stihl, 3 Tom.), and horizontal reach (48' Stihl, 40' Tom.).On paper, the Tomahawk is admittedly weaker, but still in the ballpark of the Stihl. After several uses of the Tomahawk though, it is in practice MUCH weaker than the Stihl. There is no way the Tomahawk has a 40' horizontal reach (Maybe 20-30') and its vertical reach leaves a lot to be desired. On a slightly breezy day the Stihl can still perform, but with the Tomahawk make sure you're using it on a calm day. Because it is less powerful than the Stihl, it doesn't penetrate dense vegetation nearly as well. Another issue is that the Tomahawk just doesn't atomize the spray as well as the Stihl. I think this is part of the reason why the Tomahawk doesn't reach or penetrate as well as the Stihl. As for the construction of the Tomahawk see the pics I've included. MUCH cheaper materials on this than the Stihl (obviously I knew that was gonna be an issue given the price but I think people should be aware of these issues). After my first use the spray tank had completely caved in on itself. I found the source of the problem to be a kinked vacuum tube inside the tank not allowing air into the tank so as the liquid drained out the tank caved in. Luckily the tank plastic is cheap enough so I was able to pull it back to proper shape easily enough. The kink in that tube was permanent from being in the box for so long, but at least some extra tubing is supplied so I was able to replace it. CHECK FOR THIS KINK BEFORE USE!The outlet on the spray tank is on the right side of the tank, NOT centered on the bottom like with the Stihl. So when you think the tank is empty you have to lean forward and to the right to really get all the liquid out. This is just plain old poor design work and very stupid. The blower tube is made of very thin, cheap plastic. I feel like its going to degrade from UV and crack within a couple years but we shall see. Also, the tube sections are held together with a "knob n groove" screw thread. Because the plastic is so thin if you overscrew these things when assembling the plastic will be too stretched out to stay together properly, resulting in the tube blowing apart as you're spraying. Also if you knock the tube against a branch or something (which happens frequently), the sections will easily unscrew or twist. And because the tip of the blower tube is at an angle you need these tube sections to stay perfectly in place otherwise the tip rotates and blows at the wrong angle. If the blower tube was made of thicker plastic and had better joint design I'd probably have a higher review, but they really dropped the ball on the most important part of the machine. As it is I'll be fixing this issue with sheet metal screws and duct tape. Dumb. Also, the swivel joint where the blower arm joins with the body leaks air, further contributing to lack of power at the blower tip.The Tomahawk is okay for homeowner use. If you have less than an acre and not too densely wooded I'd say it's sufficient. More than an acre or a lot of vegetation I'd say bite the the bullet and cough up the extra dough for a Stihl. The extra money will save you a lot of time and headaches. If you're a semi/pro looking to add mosquito services to your business get the Stihl. Don't even entertain the idea of buying the Tomahawk. Also, both the Tomahawk and the Stihl absolutely suck as leaf blowers. It's offensive that either manufacturer try to lie like this.

**UPDATE**
2nd season in the books and still as good as the day I bought it. Just be sure at the end of the season not to let it sit with fuel in it or liquid in the fogger tank. Basic maintenance like this will keep the machine running like a champ!

Game changer. My house sits on 12 wooded acres of land with creeks and pockets of water. Mosquitoes have always been a nightmare. This year was the worst to date, you couldn't even go outside for a second without being completely dismantled. I got a quote for the remainder of the season to have a company come spray and it was just shy of $800 so I figured why not try this and do it myself. To be honest, I'm a Stihl guy as the equipment is so darn reliable but along with that, it is expensive so I decided to give this a go.

To those that say the instructions are lacking, confusing, etc, you should just hire a service. I opened the box, laid the parts out and common sense kicked in. Part B goes on part A, tighten clamp. Attach throttle to part C, find single screw in bag, put bent hose on, put on the misting end, attach 1 clear hose, done.

To the reviewers that said "this thing leaked all over my back", learn how to properly push on a hose and put the clamp on. It does not leak unless you do something wrong, that simple.

To those that had some kind of mechanical issue with the motor, I can't speak to that. Things happen. Mix your fuel properly and like any 2-stroke it should just last forever. If you leave fuel in it for a year and expect it to work when you need it, it won't but that's on you. Some carburetors need to be adjusted for elevation, it's an easy thing to do. This thing worked perfectly right out of the box, I am in Michigan.

As for chems -- in the past I have always used Talstar P and been happy with a handheld pump sprayer. Talked to a commercial guy over the weekend that said "Demand CS is the bomb". Went out on a limb and bought a bottle. 32oz for $130-something, steep.

Whoa. Sprayed my place this evening at 630 and I feel like Connor McGregor himself came and knocked every mosquito out cold. Before that I was getting kamikaze bombers into my retina before I could run out and grab my latest Amazon package from the porch. It's 923pm EST and my wife and I have been sitting out on the deck enjoying a completely bug free life, yes, that fast.

Should I have longevity issues with the actual equipment I promise I'll update this review but from what I experienced initially, today was worth the $399 for this piece of kit. Happy guy living in the woods.

I received it a few days early. Everything was as promised. Assembled it and ran it yesterday. Worked incredibly well. Live near kemnay Manitoba in the middle of the mosquitoes. Killed everything it touched. Very surprised at how well it worked. Would definitely recommend if you're wanting to kill pests and protect livestock.
