However once I started playing and got past the first tutorial world the options started unlocking rapidly, and my son decided to join in. There's true brick-by-brick level building features, including altering the world landscape. You can dig down and discover caverns with hidden treasure chests, spend hours searching out new pieces and models and plans, do mini-quests, build towers surprisingly high into the sky (and skydive down), and horse around with diverse destruction and creation tools. If you find a bulldozer you can actually use it to bulldoze, not just drive it around. Want to make your house out of lava? Paint it with lava paint! Find a fire-breathing friend and ride it around to destroy enemies and landscape.
I particularly loved how it told you what classic LEGO set each model and figure was from as you discovered it.
It's definitely a good addictive new game, and the low retail price is icing on the cake!
I will say it is a little more to take in than the other Lego games (Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter, etc.), so it's a bit trickier for younger kids to pick up on but once they get the hang of it, they will enjoy it as well.
I would have given it 5 stars, however, there are still some glitches & kinks that are sure to be worked out over time making this a very cool game for those who love Lego!
Lots of cool fun things to do and learn
Oh and the biggest technical glitch is the loading screens. There are countless times I've ran into invisible walls while waiting for the world to load... Doesn't seem to happen in Minecraft so why in this game? This loading time also effects tunneling and digging. The speed of digging through a mountain is slow and methodical which I guess is realistic but not satisfying. I would rather have the ability to blast my way through walls with a truck as if I were a toddler destroying an entire lego city with his real lego monster truck. I'm not a toddler but legos are supposed to be more than just slow methodical construction; they also include the chaotic destruction of a beloved project.
