Update 09/14/2018:
First, I talked to Jura Technical Support and tried E6 other modes of operation.
1. Explanations of Jura TS rep about double espresso that is considerably weaker than single shot may be briefly shaped as:
* E6 brews double espresso and double coffee as a single shot - it doesn't brew sequentially two single shots
* E6 brewing unit capacity is limited
* When you brew double espresso on the stronger side, the brewing unit does not fit the double amount of coffee and it uses the maximum
coffee it fits while amount of water is always doubled. Therefore double espresso is weaker than a single shot if coffee strength is
set stronger than medium. BTW the factory setting is on stronger side; when coffee strength is set to medium, espresso is very weak (its isn't
espresso at all). This means Jura knows that factory settings provide weak double! In addition, the user manual doesn't tell
this info, it tells only that double uses twice water and amount of used coffee is not mentioned at all!
So, double coffee and double espresso in E6 modes do not work at all if you don't want to get coffee americano instead. This is obvious
defect in not only E6 design but in all Jura super automatics - I was told by Jura TS rep that all these Jura machines used the same
brewing technology. Instead of fixing the problem in design, Jura misadvertises!
* I mentioned in original version of my review that I asked this question two certified sellers of coffee machines about weaker strength of
double espresso and they told me that E6 brews double of the same strength as single. Now I am confused: it looks they don't know the
products they sell or they also misadvertise. It also look strange that all other reviews didn't notice this defect!
2. E6 espresso taste is lower than average: it feels too liquid in comparison with real smooth espresso. Increase of the strength and/or making
the grind thinner makes espresso more bitter, but there is no real espresso taste in it. Decrease of coffee strength and/or making the grind
more coarse results in weak coffee. I was not able to find these settings that produce even average espresso. It may be considered ok when
you need fast shot in the morning, but I doubtfully enjoy it in no rush. Espresso temperature is acceptable but it is not on the hot side. Coffee
crema is pretty thin; it dissolves in 3-5 min and it is significantly thinner than crema my died Spidem did. BTW, I always use Lavazza
espresso beans that always produced thick and long lasting crema by my old Spidem.
3. Milk foam and cappuccino:
Jura as all other manufactures changed milk frothing technology in comparison with my 12 years old/died Spidem automatic
machine. Now milk is sucked in from the milk container via a plastic pipe and frothing is done inside machine. Foam stream flows
under pressure from the machine directly to the cup. Experimenting with the foam I found that:
* Foam is pretty thin and it is on the liquid side. I filled a glass with foam and checked foam. My old Spidem had Pannarello
wand that shall be downed into external milk container/glass and Spidem produced there thick foam that was well separated from hot milk on
the bottom of the milk container. I have to say that foam was not always consistent: sometimes it was worse than expected. I was able to
move foam to coffee cup using a spoon and foam kept shape on top of the espresso or cappuccino. It didn't dissolve fast. Even at highest
temperature setting E6 milk foam is so thin and liquid that it can't be separated from milk by a spoon when foam is made without coffee. In
cup of coffee it is thin, it dissolves fast, and milk temperature is warm (not hot) even at highest E6 temperature setting. Milk temperature is
definitely lower than that of coffee. Therefore after adding foam with milk to coffee, it becomes warm, not hot even if the coffee cup was pre-
heated. So, I can't say I like this new frothing technology. In addition, it requires more daily maintenance of the internal milk frothing system
and overpriced Jura-made milk detergent. If interested in details, you can download and read E6 manual.
My final opinion is I purchased Jura machine for the first time and previously I heard that Jura is one of the top espresso machine makers. I am not impressed by Jura at all. Good looking machine that brews very average warm coffee that is either bitter or weak with or without warm milk with something similar to very thin, liquid, and dissolving fast foam. Jura names these drinks 'espresso' and 'cappuccino'. Some advertised features don't work because of defect in design. I am going to return this machine and I don't have an idea which manufacturer now is better than Jura. It looks that reviews don't help nowadays...
2nd Update 01/11/2019
===================
I have returned E6 in September 2018 and, finally, I found a solution to the problem how to brew ESPRESSO! However, this solution may be used only by a person who is espresso lover and who is going to spend a week+ to study and experiment... Before describing this solution I want to mention that I had experience with two other automatics: both were Gaggia Brera: I purchased the first one about 8 years ago for my son, it brewed decent espresso and it is still operational. I purchased the second Gaggia Brera 1.5 years ago when my old Spidem became inoperational and I decided to replace it. I returned the second Gaggia Brera because espresso it brewed was bad. You can look at my review of the second Gaggia Brera. After returning Brera I disassembled my old Spidem, cleaned it, assembled and it worked 1.5 more years before it finally died. So, I had an experience with 4 automatics manufactured at various years and I had an impression that quality of automatic machines and espresso they brew got worther with year the machine was built in. In September 2018, after returning E6, I talked to several automatic espresso machine sellers to figure out if the good automatic espresso machines (that brew a GOOD espresso) existed on the market. Finally, IMHO I draw the conclusion for myself: the automatic machine makers built the machines that were sellable. Nowadays the selling point for even the most expensive machine is a nice look, machine should have all imaginable electronics and beautiful display, tons of unneeded setting to be advertised. Quality of machines and espresso they brew are not important for manufacturers and sellers anymore simply because we purchase these machines mostly on-line and attractiveness of the picture is the most important decision maker to buy or not to buy the machine... So, I went to the basics and looked at semi-automatic prosumer level machines. I read tons of web pages on espresso lover forums, watched tons of videos and realised that the semi-automatics CAN brew GOOD espresso, but to convert CAN to DONE I had to pick up new to me skills of barista... I love coffee my entire live, I brew drip, french, turkish coffee, but a good espresso was always the best to me. So, I decided to go this path. After careful comparison of the machines and grinders (good grinder is as important in preparation of good espresso as the machine itself) I purchased Rocket Appartamento and Baratza Sette 270wi. However, when selecting equipment it is important how many caps you are going to brew a day. In average I brew 1-3 double espresso/cappuccino a day. Regular price for the pair I purchased is around $2K, but if you can wait for a sale (I did this) you can get them for $1.65K - almost the same as E6! Of course, there are the cheaper and more expensive semi-automatic machines and grinders on the market. I found combination of quality and price that satisfied me. After purchasing I have spent 10-14 days to learn (reading and watching videos on web and experimenting; I am a technical guy and a quick learner) how to brew good espresso, cappuccino and other related drinks. Without learning you can do nothing but sell your purchased equipment. Period. You have to learn how the semi-automatics work, how multiple factors affect espresso taste, thickness of crema, and color; you have to figure out the settings for grinder and machine. You cannot get these settings from knowledgeable people because there are no two identical machines and grinders on the market even from the same manufacturer. You have to figure out this on your own. I did this and... during my entire life I never had so GREAT ESPRESSO! Even in Italy. My friends who had my espresso told me the same. However, I didn't try espresso that was brewed by actually good barista and I don't compare my skills (of course, I am novice) with others. I only compare quality of espresso I had from various sources during my life.
Now conclusion. After you experimentally found the setting for your grinder and machine, and you also selected brand and type of coffee beans (and you don't change any of them) than:
1. Quality of espresso and cappuccino brewed by semi-automatic machine is excellent and is incomparable better than by automatic. Crema, smell, color, strength, texture, milk foam, and temperature of espresso and cappuccino made by semi-automatic are great!
2. Entire preparation of 1 cup of double espresso takes couple of minutes + about 1 minutes to make and pour milk foam into a cup. If you brew several cups at a time, multiply this timing by number of cups to brew.
3. Daily maintenance takes several minutes, it is extremely easy, but obligatory if you want your equipment work for many years (I purchased and used my equipment only for 3 last months and I don't know this on my own experience). It is allowed to perform daily maintenance not immediately after brewing cycle but in the evening. After brewing of each cup of espresso maintenance takes 20-30 sec. I cannot say anything about periodical maintenance - I didn't do this yet :-(.
4. Quality of the equipment I purchased looks very high. The machine is mostly build in stainless steel, chrome, and copper. Minimum plastic, for example, water tank and a few (out of many) pipes inside machine. It looks the machine will work 15+ years... Of course, I don't know this on my experience (I only read this in multiple places), but quality of manufacturing and materials look high. Maybe it is high because the design, technology, and materials used to build the prosumer class of machines are close to those used for the commercial machines. Of course, the overall quality of semi-automatic machines depends on price... However, the overall quality/durability of semi-automatics looks much higher than automatics in similar price ranges.
4. Look of the machine (Rocket Appartamento) is awesome! The machine is now the focal point of my kitchen. Mirroring chrome in combination with copper look like beautiful retro...
5. I found three weak points of any semi-automatics:
a. After a machine was turned on, you have to wait for 20-30 min until the brewing portion of the machine (and water in the boiler) get hot. So, you have to turn a machine on in advance. No impromptu...
b. Most important is you can't brew single espresso and just after that double espresso as one shot (or vise versa) without changing settings on the grinder and machine. Changing setting on the grinder requires throwing away one or two grinds just after dialing the grinder. Sure, you have to experiment first to figure out these settings for these two configurations, write them down and use them when switching from brewing single to brewing double as one shot. Of course, you always can simply brew double as two shots of single or brew double as one shot and after that pour half of double to another cup to get two singles. I personally prefer the last way. One single is too small amount to me.
c. The same with espresso strength: you can easily make the brewed espresso weaker (up to coffee Americano) simply adding hot water to it (semi-automatics usually have hot water wand similar to the steamer wand), however if you want the stronger espresso, you have to change settings on both grinder and machine with all consequences described in previous item.
So, the semi-automatics are much less flexible than the automatics, however, to me these weak points are not significant simply because double espresso my Rocket Appartamento brews is incredible and when people want singles I get two singles from one double.
And the last comment (if you are going to go the semi-automatic way): buy also the calibrated tamper (the machines come with the regular tamper), tamp station, and grind distributor/leveler. I didn't buy the knock box. Select all of them only of good quality. Don't buy the cheapest. These tools will help you to save your time while making espresso and make shorter the learning curve. Good luck!
NOTE: In this review I expressed only my own opinion based on only my own experience. This opinion may be wrong. I am also not affiliated with any organization and/or business that designs, manufactures, sells, advertises, distributes, and/or uses commercially any espresso/coffee making equipment and/or grows and/or roasts and/or sells coffee beans and/or participates in any related commercial activity. I have never got any profit from any of the activities mentioned above.
