first 2 laptops I got were DOA, this one might as well have been.
After using it for over a year, I can say it's the single worst laptop I've ever owned.
The fingerprint scanner only works 10% of the time.
The 2-in-1 tablet mode doesn't play well on windows 10, and keeps getting stuck with the onscreen keyboard in laptop mode.
It crashes whenever the screen shuts off, and has to be power cycled to come back on.
It's lost all network devices twice, which I had to manually install from a usb.
This will be the last Asus product I ever buy
If you're looking for a lightweight laptop for school, travel, or work I highly recommend this Asus!
The display is clear and bright enough that I can use it outdoors without difficulty - after I installed an anti-glare screen protector.
I had problems with the Wi-Fi adaptor flashing a list of hotspots, then going blank. I tried getting the latest drivers off of the ASUS site but it didn't help. I finally went to the Intel site and those drivers fixed the problem.
Their is no Ethernet port but my laptop came with a Ethernet to USB adaptor.
The touchpad works well and sometimes I just use it, but I don't know all of the gestures for things like drag/drop so I prefer to use a mouse. Speaking of mice, two standard USB ports isn't a lot, especially if you want to use a mouse and the Ethernet adaptor. That leaves how many for your memory stick? I ended up getting a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse. It works great, links about as fast as a dedicated dongle.
The microSD slot is a bit of a pain if you are constantly loading images from a camera. I ended up buying a new microSD card with the full size adaptor and using that in my camera and then just plugging the microSD into the laptop. It works but the microSD is a little touchier about how you plug it in. Would have much preferred a full size adaptor.
I tried the fingerprint reader but didn't have a lot of luck with it in conjunction with Windows Hello. It would say it didn't recognize my fingerprint, then when I would say I wanted to add the same finger it would say that fingerprint was already recorded. I'm thinking it is more of a Hello problem than hardware.
I haven't tried using the camera for Hello so no comment on that feature. Besides, do you really want the camera to be constantly on, looking for your face? Of course at my age, if anyone gets a peek when I come out of the shower then they deserve what they get - No! No! I can never un-see it! (By the way, all of you guys buying voice actuated assistants and sprinkling them around your house - YOU'RE INSANE!!!)
One minor complaint is that the "feature" that lifts the back of the keyboard slightly when you open the lid also lifts the back anti-slip pads off your work surface, making it easy for the laptop to slide around.
A bigger problem (I suppose) is that the USB C port is data transfer only. I haven't verified but I don't believe you can run a display from that port. I called ASUS and they suggested just using a USB 3 dock. (Great gnashing of teeth because I thought that was the whole point of USB C). I say I suppose it's a problem because I've never actually needed to run a monitor from either port as the laptop has a full-sized HDMI port. But, if you are thinking (as I was) that you could buy a USB C docking port with and HDMI, Ethernet and power connection and only have to plug and unplug one cable, you're out of luck. You have to plug in two cables & a power cord instead - oh, the humanity!
Overall though, it's a great laptop. Fast, small, light, bright screen, long battery life, no mechanical hard drive rattling around. Cheap at the price.
Top reviews from other countries
- Fantastic specs for the price (but resellers vary on price, so check first.)
- Runs Linux perfectly; hardware all works without any fuss on Devuan 3.0. (Use the provided usb ethernet adapter to install proprietary wireless drivers from Apt for minimal headache.)
- Product has a pressure-sensitive pen input, as well as a discrete graphics card -- finding both in the same machine is pretty rare, but extremely valuable if you're a multimedia professional or hobbyist. (Listings also vary on the graphics card so pay close attention.)
- Build quality is good, hinges are reasonably sturdy.
- Full-sized HDMI port makes it easy to plug in anywhere.
- Surprisingly light.
- Screen is big and easily-visible, with minimal bezel compared to a lot of offerings that have pen digitizers.
- 90-degree power cord is good for not applying stress on the cable when plugged in.
- Keys feel good to type on, low travel distance.
The bad:
- In tablet mode, the screen doesn't actually hold very well to the body; it ends up with about a five degree wedge instead of folding down completely flat, unless you hold it closed.
- Has got a proprietary digitizer, so you need to buy an Asus (or asus-compatible) pen and can't buy a generic one with the buttons and features that you'd like. Also doesn't come with pen, so buy it separately.
- Speaker is very tinny. You'll want to use headphones or external speakers if you care about audio quality. However the audio is still clear enough that it's perfectly good for watching videos, and has a good maximum volume.
- Power cord doesn't pop out when yanked, so I imagine tripping over it could be very bad for the socket or power cord.
- Only two USB ports; get a hub if you need one, or Logitech unifying reciever for mouse/keyboard to keep other port free.
- Paint already wearing off from where my right hand rests on the trackpad/keyboard after a few months of use. I don't mind; laptops always get worn if you use them for any amount of time, there's no sense in fussing over it. But if that is something that you care about then prepare to do touch-ups.
